Becoming a licensed plumber in New York requires a combination of at least five years of education and experience working under the supervision of a master plumber. The Board also issues training cards for trainees and identification cards for officers. Courses include exam preparation, OSHA requirements, safety laws, trainee training, plumbing codes, and gas laws. As an apprentice, you'll assist the master plumber with a variety of plumbing jobs, including installing pipes, plumbing repairs, and installing fixtures. To become an official plumber in New York, you must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED.
You must also have at least seven years of experience working with a master plumber in the past 10 years. The first step in obtaining your plumbing license is to become an apprentice to a licensed master plumber. This experience must include no less than one good year of experience in New York City. Additionally, you must have two good years of experience working in designing and establishing piping structures under the immediate supervision of a licensed master plumber in New York City. Like electrical contractors, you must first gain experience as an apprentice, then apply to become an officer, and finally, if you wish, apply and complete an exam to become a plumbing master.
The adjustment of experience can be obtained by making an agreement to maintain, replace and repair pipes on existing structures while working in a New York City office.
